Lawn Tractors
The grass may not always grow greener, but one thing is for sure — it does grow
and when it does, it needs mowing. Fortunately, today’s lawn mowing options are
many.
Reel mowers, push mowers, self-propelled walk behind mowers, lawn tractors
and full-sized garden tractors, you can choose your equipment according to your
yard size, preferences, and accessory needs.
Environmentally friendly reel mowers are fine if you’re faced with just a strip
of boulevard to mow but for larger lawns, you’re better off with some kind of
powered machine. Yards up to ½ acre in size easily are trimmed with a walk
behind push or self-propelled mower. These come in a range of deck sizes and are
available in gas models, corded electric models, and cordless types.
However, when you’re looking at a large lawn and spending most of your free time
in upkeep, consider a riding mower, or a lawn or garden tractor.
You’ll find sit down mowing at its easiest with a riding mower. Simplicity in
operation and good maneuverability make them a good choice to mow, mulch, and
bag grass clippings for lawns up to an acre in size. However, their deck size
(28 to 33 inches) is usually smaller than the decks of bigger tractors and
because of a rear engine placement, most aren’t able to accept other
attachments.
The lawn tractor is by far the most popular choice for large lawns one to three
acres in size. Although bagging kits are usually sold separately, other add-ons
like plows, cart tows, and snowplow blades make them well worth the extra money.
Larger front placed engines also offer better weight distribution and their cut
size can be up to 48 inches. Probably the biggest disadvantage is that they
don’t let you get in close, so you may need to finish trimming around trees and
other yard obstacles with a push mower or weed eater.
If your lawn is huge or if you have a large garden, then the full-sized garden
tractor is your best choice. Garden tractors have a heftier frame, transmission,
an engine from 18 to 24 horsepower and larger wheels that allow them to pull
attachments like plows, harrows, and garden tillers and still cut the grass. In
addition, their deck sizes range from 46 to 54 inches wide.
