The Environmentally Friendly American Lawn Mower
The American Lawn Mower Company was founded in 1895. They manufacture a variety
of push reel mowers under the labels “American” and “Great States”. An American
lawn mower provides an alternative to noisy and expensive gas mowers. They are
environmentally friendly, good for your lawn, and much easier to operate than
Grandpa’s old reel mower.
If you are of a certain vintage (like older than 40) you may remember your
father’s or grandfather’s old reel mower. Man, those were a pain to use. Heavy
and clunky – they made lawn cutting a real chore. Today’s American lawn mower is
much different. Various models weigh between 16 and 32 pounds, the handles are
made of tubular steel and some models feature light-weight plastic wheels.
All this is a far cry from Grandpa’s mower. Old style mowers weighed about 60
pounds. They had uncomfortable wooden handles and the wheels were made of heavy
cast iron. For those of you who remember the old style mowers, the American lawn
mower is like a gift from heaven.
There are several models of American lawn mower to choose from. All share a
low-maintenance design and zero emission engine. The engine? It’s you! Good old
sweat is what powers the American lawn mower. These machines are good for the
environment and good for your health.
Don’t worry, though. The workout you get from pushing an American lawn mower is
not much more than from pushing a gas mower. The modern mechanisms make the
mower surprisingly easy to push while providing a superior cut to the grass.
Reel mowers cut the grass in a snipping motion, much like the action of
scissors. This is much healthier for your lawn than a rotary cutter like those
on most gas or electric mowers. Rotary cutters tend to tear the grass stems,
leaving them vulnerable to disease and sun damage. An American lawn mower also
mulches your lawn as you cut. The fine clippings are returned to the soil to
provide natural fertilizer to your yard.
An American lawn mower is light-weight, manoeuvrable, dependable and
environmentally friendly. Check out this classic from the past – it may play a
