All about Lawn Mower Batteries

Lawn mower batteries are required for cordless electric lawn mowers, robotic mowers and riding mowers. Riding mowers require batteries similar to car batteries for the ignition and running lights. These are usually 12 volt acid batteries giving out about 220 cranking amps.

Rechargeable lawn mower batteries for cordless lawn mowers are usually 12, 24 or 36 volts. Twenty-four volt is the most common and will give a charge that lasts about 1 hour. Thirty-six volt batteries will run longer, so it is important to consider the size of your lawn when choosing a cordless electric lawn mower.

The length of time that lawn mower batteries hold their charge depends on the amperage and cutting conditions. Long grass and difficult cutting conditions will require more power and cause the battery to discharge faster.

Generally speaking, 24 volt batteries are suitable for lawns of up to 1/3 of an acre. Cordless lawn mowers are usually lighter than gas powered mowers, but if your lawn has a lot of hills, a cordless mower with a 36 volt battery might feel quite heavy. Lawn mower batteries on cordless mowers don’t usually have the power to drive a self-propelled mechanism, so if you have a lot of hilly areas to cut, a gas powered self-propelled mower might be a better choice for you.

Lawn mower batteries take about 4 hours to regain 70% of their charge, and may take up to 24 hours to fully recharge. It’s rather inconvenient to run out of power in the middle of cutting your lawn, so always make sure the battery is fully charged before you start work.

Robotic lawn mowers also take rechargeable lawn mower batteries. They usually give off a signal when the batteries are running low, and can be recharged by plugging into a standard electric outlet.

Some robot lawn mowers can return to their recharge stations themselves when their lawn mower batteries run low. The recharge station can be permanently installed on an inconspicuous part of your lawn and the lawn mower can be stored there when it is not cutting the lawn. This type of robot lawn mower is fully automatic, and can be programmed to cut the lawn on any schedule.
