Lawn Mower Engines – Choosing the Right One
When buying a lawn mower, the price depends a lot on the size and quality of
the engine. Not all lawn mower engines are created equal. A 10 horsepower engine
from different manufacturers can vary a lot in construction details and
features. Some engines are built to last, while others have only a short life
span.
The engine of a lawn mower is its most expensive element. Cheap mowers cut costs
by using cheap engines. They might serve you for a season or two, but after that
you will probably have trouble with them. Good mowers come with good lawn mower
engines.
Small size lawn mower engines for walk-behind mowers are usually about 3 or 4
horsepower. They are fairly simple engines and a well built model should give
you service for several years if you service it regularly. These engines are
suitable for smaller lawns and gentle terrains.
Mid sized lawn mower engines are often used on self-propelled models. These
mowers are easier to use on larger lawns and where there is a variety of
terrains to cut. They usually have a larger gas tank, making them longer running
engines. They usually come in sizes of about 5 to 6 horsepower.
Six to 7 horsepower lawn mower engines are suitable for professional mowers
which see a lot of use. They may have an overhead valve design which increase
fuel efficiency, and their rugged construction means a longer working life. All
these factors are important in a professional machine.
Riding mowers also have various size lawn mower engines to suit different needs.
The smallest engines for riding mowers are about 8 to 12 horsepower. These would
be suitable for smaller sized, fairly flat lawns.
For larger areas and more hilly terrain, a larger lawn mower engine is needed.
Riding mowers with engines in the range of 12 to 20 horsepower offer increased
running time and better fuel mileage.
High performance engines are suitable for lawn maintenance contractors. They can
be as big as 25 horsepower, and are strong enough to pull loads as well as cut
grass. Often these machines will do double duty as a snow remover or garden
tiller. These riding mowers require well-built, dependable lawn mower engines to
heavy duty use.
